THE BRAND
Weight Watchers® is one of the UK’s most successful brands. When the growth of this brand is considered over the preceeding 5 years it is arguably ‘the’ most successful brand. The UK retail sales now sit at the dizzy sum of £320 million per year. The brand itself is based on a multifaceted product range. There are also weekly Member meetings, the online business, monthly lifestyle magazine, quarterly food magazine, and food retail range.
Weight Watchers products straddle many food categories. The brand reach is increased via a carefully managed programme of new product development and sales. Weight Watchers have a dedicated UK retail licensing team who oversee and manage the activities of 25+ licensees and over 250 products.
THE BACKGROUND
Rivermill identified an opportunity in ambient and chilled meal accompaniments for Weight Watchers. These two categories are very disparate. They require knowledge and manufacturing expertise across a number of very different areas. For example, understanding the market, consumer and retailer needs for Bagel is very different to that of Wraps or Pitta Breads. However, it helps the brand and the retailer to have one company presenting category solutions across each of these areas.
THE RESULTS
Over the past 2 years Rivermill have developed over 17 products across chilled and ambient. At both the 2009 and the 2010 Weight Watchers licensee conference, Rivermill were presented with an award for outstanding success.
